Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has stated that the rising cost of living and a perceived lack of respect for the rule of law have fueled Ghanaians’ desire to vote for the NDC in the upcoming December elections.
Speaking at the “Worship with the Clergy” event in Kumasi, Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for mismanaging the economy, leading to soaring food inflation, the return of power outages, and other challenges.
Mahama also weighed in on the ongoing tensions between Parliament and the Supreme Court, emphasising the need for strong leadership from President Akufo-Addo.
He suggested that the President should mediate between both institutions and involve the clergy to resolve the issues amicably.
“For some time now, Ghanaians have been enduring frequent power outages, a result of the accumulated debt in the energy sector under this government. There is dumsor, but no timetable to guide people. Apart from the energy sector, food prices have skyrocketed, making Ghana one of the highest in Africa in terms of food inflation, according to the World Bank. Many Ghanaians are fed up with the hardships and are calling for a change. They want the NDC, which has a proven track record of better governance, back in power,” Mahama said.
“What is happening in Parliament can be easily resolved with the right leadership. If the President calls both parties—Parliament and the Supreme Court—and engages the clergy in finding a solution, the matter could be settled quickly. I have long argued that frequent visits to the Supreme Court for constitutional interpretation show a flaw in our laws, and I believe it’s time to review the constitution to address these issues. This will help strengthen our democracy,” he stated.
The former President also outlined some of his government’s key policy plans, including a ban on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in forest reserves and water bodies. He committed to promoting responsible mining that protects Ghana’s natural resources.
“One of the most pressing challenges facing the country today is illegal mining. Our forests, water bodies, and lands are being destroyed as a result of galamsey. Under an NDC government, we will enforce a ban on mining in river bodies and forests and ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly to safeguard the integrity of our environment,” Mahama declared.
Mahama appealed to the clergy and all Ghanaians to work towards ensuring a peaceful election, stressing that the nation’s democracy and peace are invaluable.
