ECOWAS Court Rules Against Ghana for Rights Violations in Shalimar Abbiusi Case

The ECOWAS Court has ruled in favor of Ms. Shalimar Abbiusi, the spokesperson for the New Force, in her case against the Republic of Ghana over violations of her fundamental rights.

The court found that Ghana wrongfully arrested, rearrested, and illegally deported Ms. Abbiusi in December 2023, causing significant harm to her personal and professional reputation.

According to the ruling, the actions of the Ghana Immigration Service breached Article 6 of the Liberty of People, especially as all charges against Ms. Abbiusi were dropped by the State Prosecutor.

The court ordered the Ghanaian government to pay compensation, marking a landmark win for justice and accountability.

Ms. Abbiusi was represented by MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, Esq., alongside Lawyer Belinda Narkey Quaynor. Mr. Sosu welcomed the ruling, saying, “We feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has protected the rights of Shalimar.”

The New Force commended the decision and urged Ghana to uphold human rights and constitutional principles in a press release.

“This case reflects a broader issue of political persecution that threatens Ghana’s democracy,” the New Force stated, calling on civil society and the international community to denounce such violations and push for institutional reforms.
