Israel and Hezbollah Agree to Ceasefire

Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, ending 14 months of intense fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border. The truce begins November 27, 2024, at 4 a.m. local time. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited strategic reasons, including focusing on Iran, replenishing military stockpiles, and isolating Hamas in Gaza, for accepting the deal. While Israel retains the right to strike if Hezbollah breaches the agreement, pre-ceasefire Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions. The ceasefire does not affect Israel’s ongoing operations in Gaza against Hamas.

In his announcement today, President Joe Biden detailed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. He stated, “Under the deal reached today, effective at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow, local time, the fighting across the Lebanese-Israeli border will end. This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.”

Biden emphasized that Hezbollah and other groups will not be allowed to threaten Israel’s security and reassured that U.S. troops would not be involved in implementing the deal.
