President Nana Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval to upgrade several districts to municipalities and municipalities to metropolitan areas.

The districts elevated to municipalities include Offinso North, Brim North, and Karaga, while the municipalities upgraded to metropolises are the Ho Municipal Assembly, Sunyani Municipal Assembly, New Juaben Municipal Assembly, and Wa Municipal Assembly.

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) issued a statement confirming the upgrades, stating, “”Pursuant to Section 3(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana has granted Executive Approval for the upgrade of some Districts to Municipalities and Municipalities to Metropolis. This was based on a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) in line with the relevant legal provisions as stipulated in Act 936. Accordingly, the following Municipal and District Assemblies are duly upgraded pending finalisation of all necessary legal and administrative processes.”

The statement further clarified that the upgrades are pending the finalization of all necessary legal and administrative processes.
