President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, along with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is poised to inaugurate the newly constructed Kumasi International Airport as per the announcement by the Transport Ministry.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, marking the official opening of the airport to international travelers arriving directly in Kumasi.
Initially set for a June opening, the Ministry has confirmed that all necessary preparations have been completed, allowing for the project to be unveiled a month ahead of plan.
The Kumasi International Airport Rehabilitation project, valued at $75.23 million, commenced in November 2018. It encompasses an array of enhancements including the runway extension, the erection of a contemporary passenger terminal with advanced facilities, additional apron space for larger aircraft, multiple service facilities, and a new air traffic control tower.
The upgrade will extend the current runway from 1,981 meters to 2,300 meters, facilitating the accommodation of larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 737-800.
Following the inauguration, the airport will adopt the name Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport.
