Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has slammed President Akufo-Addo after the President unveiled a statue of himself in the Western Region.
His comment comes after Akufo-Addo unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi on Wednesday, November 6, during his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.
Mahama described the act as a form of “self-glorification,” asserting that Akufo-Addo should have demonstrated humility and allowed others to praise him for his achievements rather than seeking personal recognition.
He questioned the appropriateness of a sitting president unveiling a statue of himself, emphasizing that such honors should come from the people, not from the individual seeking recognition.
“He went to Takoradi recently and unveiled a statue of himself. How is this possible?” Mahama asked. “Every president must have humility. People should be the ones praising you and honoring you, not the other way around. You shouldn’t craft your own statue, unveil it, and then ask the people to clap for you.”
Mahama also criticised the President for receiving honorary degrees while still in office, suggesting that Akufo-Addo should have waited until his term ended before seeking such recognition.
“You go to every university across the country and ask them to give you a doctorate while you are still a sitting president,” Mahama said. “He should have waited until his tenure was over, so that when people look at your work, they could say, ‘You did very well, and we want to honor you.’ But instead, he has pressured all the universities in the country to give him a doctorate.”
