Over 20,000 bags of expired rice distributed to SHSs – Ablakwa alleges

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has accused the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) of distributing over 20,000 bags of expired rice to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across Ghana earlier this year.

In a post on social media post (X), Mr. Ablakwa detailed what he described as a “dangerous, murderous, and corrupt scheme” orchestrated by NAFCO in collaboration with a company known as Lamens Investments Africa Limited.

He claimed the rice, originally imported from India, had expired in December 2023 and was repackaged into new sacks without expiry dates before being distributed to SHSs across the country.

Ablakwa’s post cited findings from his parliamentary oversight work, which he said exposed a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

According to him, the rice was re-packaged at a NAFCO facility in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, where it was placed in white polypropylene bags with misleading labels such as “ECOWAS” and “Made in Ghana rice.”

He further alleged that the new packaging concealed the rice’s true origins and expiration date.
