We’ve not received any additional GH₵25 million – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied claims by the Ministry of Education that an additional GH₵25 million has been released to support WAEC’s operations.

According to John Kapi, Director of Public Affairs at WAEC, the Ministry’s statement is untrue, and the only payment received was GH₵25 million by cheque last Thursday, which is part of the outstanding GH₵118 million owed to WAEC.

WAEC has been facing challenges in releasing the 2024 WASSCE results due to scanner breakdowns and outstanding debts from the government.

The council has appealed to the government for urgent funding to facilitate the release of the results.

Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, had confirmed the release of the funds on Monday, December 23, and assured the public that WAEC would release the 2024 WASSCE results soon.

However, speaking on Starr Today, Kapi revealed that during a meeting on Monday, December 23, the Minister promised to send an additional GH₵20 million, but as of Tuesday, December 24, no instructions had been given to release the funds.

He described the statement as ‘untrue’ and Ghanaians must debunked it.

Mr. Kapi said, “That is not true. We indicated that some GH₵25 million by cheque was released last Thursday, that is the only payment we have received from the Minister out of the GH₵118 million cedis. Yesterday [ Monday, December 23], there was a meeting between him, our head of national office and the director of finance.”

“That was when he promised us that he will send some GH₵20 million today [Tuesday, December 24], but as of the time we were leaving the office late this afternoon [Tuesday, December 24], the director at the Ministry of Finance indicated that the Minister had not instructed them to release any additional funds, so on our part, this is untrue.”
